The Defence Minister laid the foundation stone for a new Very Low Frequency (VLF) Station of the Indian Navy on Tuesday. The station, located at the Damagundam Reserve Forest in Vikarabad, Telangana, will cover 2,900 acres and is expected to cost Rs 3,200 crore.
The new facility is designed to enhance the Indian Navy’s communication capabilities, allowing for reliable and secure transmission over long distances. The Defence Minister highlighted its importance, noting that it will serve as a strategic asset, crucial for effective command and control in challenging maritime environments.
“Effective coordination between men and machines is becoming extremely important in view of the evolving methods of warfare,” he said while addressing the gathering. He stressed that real-time communication between ships, submarines, and command centres is a decisive factor in military operations. “Without real-time communication, we cannot gain an edge despite having adequate equipment or manpower,” he added.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of strong communication systems in complex military operations, stating that they are essential for timely decision-making and conveying orders to field units. He emphasised that clear communication boosts both morale and unity among soldiers in operational environments.
He further noted the growing global interest in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and stressed the need to continuously empower the Indian Navy. “Our interest is spread across the Indo-Pacific region. If India is to secure its commercial and security interests, a strong communication system is necessary,” he said.
